Climate Change Is A Challenge: Transam

Transam Fiji Limited is challenged by the climate change for shipment for the offloading of clinker.
Local ship agent Transam Fiji Limited operations manager Madhulesh Lakhan said weather played a vital part in the delaying of movement of clinker from vessels to factories.
Mr Lakhan said they had been transporting clinker for two cement factories in Fiji.
“We provide transportation to two factories which are Pacific Cement Limited and Tengy Cement Company,” Mr Lakhan said.
“The shipment for clinkers is done every three months.
“It has been only a year when we started shipping clinkers to Fiji from Japan. Pacific Direct Line (PDL) charters the vessels which carry the clinker; we are the agents here to clear for the companies.
“The maximum tonnage to carry clinker is 26 tonnages.”
Mr Lakhan also shared some challenges they face while discharging clinker.
“The challenge is dust and road spillage which we have to clear when deliveries are done.
“We have to get the approval from Department of Environment and then we can discharge the clinker to the factories.”
Meanwhile yesterday Poavosa Wisdom has been at the Suva Harbour since Sunday to offload clinker for Pacific Cement Factory in Lami. It was supposed to offload on Sunday but due to rain it could not offload on the day. Its schedule has been deferred pending Suva Ports clearance.
