After missing out on the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Samoan 7s head coach Sir Gordon Tietjens is confident the side will take part in the four-yearly event in Tokyo.

“It is big year for sevens rugby at large particularly for Samoa as we will be preparing for the opening season of the World Sevens Series and also try our very best to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo,” he said.

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t qualify for the last Olympics so we are pretty confident to make it in 2020.”

The team trounced Tuvalu 43-0 in their first game.

“Our opening match was quiet easy and it was pleasing to see the boys dominating,” Sir Gordon said..

“Our expectation is to pick up with the pace of the game because that’s exactly what we need to have when competing in the World Sevens Series.

“We need to adapt quicker to the different game style and play a lot of top teams.”
