The long wait to secure their 99-year leases is finally over for residents outside Nadi and Sigatoka Towns in the Western Division.

On Thursday 68 recipients were handed their lease documents from the Minister for Land and Mineral Resources, Faiyaz Koya at the Nadi Civic Centre.

“At last we have finally received what we have been waiting for, for years, thanks to the Government,” said 66-year-old recipient Janif Khan

Mr Khan, a Justice of Peace and resident of Mate Road, Korovuto was grateful that his yearning for lease approval came to fulfillment.

“I am happy because it has been 12 years that I have been waiting for my lease and finally I have received it today,” he said.

“Before I bought a crown land lease and they stopped me from building a house. So I bought a native land lease in Korovuto and build a house there. I am thankful for the FijiFirst Government for working on the renewal of leases.”

Renuka Devi, 52, resident of Nacobi Sonasali and originally from Kabisi Sigatoka, has been looking forward to the releasing of leases today.

“It has been 10 years since we bought the land we have been expecting renewal of our lease,” Ms Devi said.

“I am grateful today for this government in thinking of us and giving us our lease.”

A security officer and a father of six, 48- year-old Asivurusi Bukalidi felt privileged in receiving the lease yesterday.

Originally from Ovalau and now residing at Votualevu, Nadi he said, it was hard to get something like this from the previous Government.

“My wife and I, we are overjoyed today that we receive our lease from the Government.

“It is an answer to our prayers. A great help to my family. I thank this Government for assisting us in so many ways.”

Mr Koya said Government initiatives had assured Fijians that all promises would be fulfilled.

“I am pleased to tell you all that it’s over, that you have finally received your leases,” Mr Koya said.

“In order to regularise the livelihood of our people who reside in informal settlements, the ministry has provided the approval notices.

“Remember this is Government work and Government continues until after the election.

“I am the Government minister and I will continue to serve the people. The ministry will continue to serve you to the best of its abilities for the benefit of all citizens of this country.

“I would like to remind all the past, current and future recipients of the approval notices to take heed of the terms and condition outlined in the leases.”
