The Naseakula Rugby Club Under-20 Sevens tournament will be held at Subrail Park, Labasa on November 16-17.

A total of 24 teams will participate with the winner getting $1000 and runners-up $400.

Club secretary Naibuka Sovosi said they need to help Macuata in next year’s Vodafone Vanua Championship competition.

“There have been talks on implementing changes but nothing has been done so we are taking the initiative of developing young players who can play for Macuata,” Sovosi said.

“Macuata performed poorly in the Vanua championship and we need to go out and scout for more talents in the rural areas. Rugby brings unity among communities.”

Over the decades Naseakula Rugby has produced top rugby players who have gone on to don the national jumper like Meliki Baleicakau, Emosi Tatawaqa and Sevens Rugby World Cup winner Jope Tuikabe.

Also, included are prominent players like Eroni Latianara, winger Semi Volitiviti, Japan sevens forward Kameli Soejima and current Queensland Reds Super Rugby winger Filipo Daugunu.

Macuata Rugby Union president Usaia Turaganivalu said they have a three-year development plan in place.

“We will be focusing on the secondary school students who’ll be able to play for their clubs as soon as they finish school,” Turaganivalu said.

“We need to start small and work towards our vision. We’ve a plan in place and our mission is to win back our spot in the Skipper Cup competition by 2021.”

The Macuata Rugby Union had a successful club competition this year and planning ahead for the next season.

Four members of the Macuata side recently toured with the Vodafone Vanua XVs to New Zealand.
