When Manjula Devi made the sacrifice to quit work and look after her granddaughter, she did so to give her the attention she needed in the absence of her parents.

Yesterday Neha Shivani Ram proved that sacrifice worthy after being awarded the Principal’s Award.

Generally, the principal’s Award means outstanding achievement by a dedicated student in the field of academics, sports, arts, and other contributions to the school.

The 18-year-old was emotional after she described the struggles she had to overcome to reach this far.

“I’ve lived with my grandparents since I was three-years-old because my parents had divorced,” Neha said.

“It wasn’t easy for me growing up but I thank the Lord for never forsaking me.

“I sometimes wonder why life was hard, but then I remembered that God has a plan for me.

“My grandparents always encouraged me to do my best and to never use my circumstance as an excuse for not doing my best.

“Receiving this award came as a surprise for me, but it has always been at the back of my mind. I thank everyone who believed in me despite everything.”

Ms Devi was in tears while she described the hardship they had to overcome.

“I resigned so that I could look after my granddaughter. We faced financial problems, but we never gave up for our granddaughter’s sake,” she said.

“Seeing her walk up the stage to receive her award made me so proud because I know what she had gone through. I thank God for giving me a hardworking and obedient child.”

Neha wants to become an environmentalist.
