A taxi driver of Narere, Nasinu, facing aggravated robbery related charges was sentenced to six months in jail by the Labasa Magistrates Court on Monday.

James Ashwin Raj, 35, voluntarily pleaded guilty before Magistrate Timoci Qalinauci last Thursday.

Police prosecutor Vignesh Prasad told the court that on November 5, between 3am to 3.30am, Raj broke into the house of Vishal Naidu at Wailevu, Labasa, and stole $50, six mobile phones and two gold souvenirs.

He was charged with one count burglary, seven counts of theft and one count of serious assault.

For one count of theft, stealing a mobile phone worth $400 belonging to Sanjeshwar Lal, he was sentenced to six months imprisonment.

The phone was recovered.

For other offences, Magistrate Qalinauci transferred the cases to the High Court.

He said Raj had previous convictions and committed habitual offences such as aggravated robbery.

He has been further remanded and will appear in the High Court on November 20, 2018.
