Despite her initial concerns about not being able to vote, amputee Selai Diroko, 58, was all smiles yesterday after casting her vote at Naleba College, outside Labasa.

An amputee for five years, Ms Diroko voted with the help of her husband, Viliame Turaganiqali, 58.

“I was worried, but my husband has always been my major source of inspiration,” she said.

“I’m so glad that my husband helped me.”

She said her husband has been supportive since her leg was amputated. “We voted in Saqani last time and he was the one always ready to help me,” she said.

“It is very important that I voted and I will continue voting in the years to come.”

She also said that disabled persons had now been assisted more than ever before, prompting her to vote.

“I’m thankful to the Fijian Elections Office staff for helping me out,” she said.

Mr Turaganiqali said: “I, as a husband, have a responsibility and that is to help my wife in every possible way.”
