Fiji Rice Limited’s Maunidevo Irrigation area, Macuata rice project is expected to have an output of around 250 tonnes of paddy.

Fiji Rice general manager Ashrit Pratap said the 168 acre project land has ball grain and star varieties planted on it for this season.

Therice company purchased a tractor with its farming implements for the project.

He said Dreketi mill workers would be involved in the rice production.

“We require more paddy as the demand for local rice has increased drastically,” he said.

“And hence we have launched a rice development programme where the company will fund for all land preparation till harvesting.

“The paddy will then be taken to the mill.”

“After deducting the cost the profit will be given back to the farmers.”

He added the two pilot projects under the rice development programme would be begin at Laqere in Tabia and Navidamu in Seaqaqa.

“We are looking at 50 acres at each site,” he said.

“After deducting expenses $192,960 is expected to be shared amongst the farmers.”
