The Fiji Airways Fijiana 15s rugby team wants to be the best in the Pacific.

And it starts tomorrow against Tonga in the first round of the Oceania Rugby Women’s Championship at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

Fijiana play Tonga at 3.30pm while Papua New Guinea face Samoa at 1pm

The Inoke Male-coached side has set its target and aims to treat all games as the final in its bid to top the region.

Team manager Paulini Tamatasasa said the new players blended well and she was impressed with the performances of former Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s reps Ana Maria Roqica, Rusila Nagasau, Lavenia Tinai and Timaima Ravisa.

“One of our aims is to be number one in the Pacific and we intend to work tirelessly to make it happen and achieve our mission,” Tamatasasa said. “The former Fijiana 7s reps have blended well with the rest of the squad. “It’s a big transition, a new beginning for them as players have the chance to learn from one another.”

The team works on improving their forwards play before taking on Tonga tomorrow.

“It’s an area we need to improve on and we are working hard.”

The Fijians are aware of the challenge Tonga will bring because most of its players, like Samoa and PNG, are based in Australia and New Zealand.

“We are a team with 100 per cent locals and the girls are prepared for the challenge,” Tamatasasa said.

“We are prepared for the tough, physical battle and we will treat all games as a final.”

First Step

Qualification for Women’s Rugby World Cup 2021 is the ultimate goal for the four teams, but they need regular competition to stay competitive. And the first step starts in Lautoka tomorrow in getting women involved and building the player base for the future.
