First-time voter Jone Burenivalu said the heavy rain yesterday should not have been an excuse for people not to show up and vote in the 2018 General Election.

The 22-year-old from Caubati, Nasinu, arrived at the Assemblies of God Church Hall polling station in Caubati at the crack of dawn to wait for his turn to vote.

“Voting is our responsibility,” Mr Burenivalus said.

“Overall, the process was easy and I was surprised by how quickly everything was done.”

Mr Burenivalu stayed behind for a while after he voted to help the elderly, who had braved the heavy rain to reach the polling venue and vote.

“My friends and I have remained here all morning just to help out at the venue by wiping the tiles because it gets slippery because of the rain and walked the elderly back to the village,” he said.

Hamza Usman, 19, said: “As a first time voter, I found the voting process to be surprisingly very fast.

“I did not think it was going to be this quick because I came here at around 11am and I was done within five minutes.”
