In a bid to make his vote count, a 21-year-old farmer travelled by horseback for two kilometres from Batiri Village to Batirilagi District School to cast his vote.

Suraki Tima was one of the 95 people who cast their votes at the polling venue.

Mr Tima said it was important for him to exercise his democratic right and to be part of history by making his voice count.

“Voting is important because we get to choose who gets to form the next Government. We only get to vote once every four years and this is a prime time to help decide who will lead our Government and take us forward,” the Batiri native said.

“Most of the villagers who cast their vote during pre-poll voting were above the age of 40. Most of the elderly were advised to come in early to cast their votes, the oldest voter at the village is 79 years old.

“While the polling station is two kilometres from where I live, I decided to take my horse with me to the polling stations.

“We have cars and other means of transport in the village, but I decided to go on my horse to make my voice heard.”

He said his son’s future was paramount to him and he voted accordingly.

“I didn’t have second thoughts as to who to vote for. I am happy that I cast my vote for my candidate and I would like thank the Fijian Elections Office team for a quick voting process,” he said.

There was a lot of excitement as people from all walks of life and of different ages from 18 above queued at the school. Women and men dressed for the occasion at the polling venue.
