To ensure the safety of students on the road, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) distributed specialised road safety equipment to two schools in the Northern Division.

This was made possible through Total (Fiji) Limited, the fuel service company who are helping distribute the equipment worth $25,000 to 35 schools around the country.

LTA’s road safety officer Josefa Rokosuli said the equipment would improve visibility for road safety patrols.

He said other schools were also considered, adding that an assessment was in progress to determine priority areas.

“Naseakula District School and St Mary’s Primary School in Labasa received safety equipment such as reflective vests, cones and stop or go paddles from Land Transport Authority, in conjunction with Total,” Mr Rokosuli said.

“These schools were selected because they had no road patrol equipment and are located in areas where crossing the road can prove dangerous for the students.

“Naseakula District School was selected because it is located on a blind corner making it hazardous for the children.

Mr Rokosuli said students travelling on public transports are vulnerable traffic road accidents.

Naseakula District School assistant head teacher Semi Ramaqa said the school was in need of road safety equipment.

“Teachers worrying about the safety of students will be a thing of the past.

“Before, they would use a zebra crossing near Sangam Primary School, which is a kilometre away from the school.

“We couldn’t do much because we had no road safety equipment,” Mr Ramaqa said.
