Eating biscuit and rourou (taro leaves) worked for Wailotua, Wainibuka  girl Losana Lakai when she won the Under-9 girls 50 metres final yesterday.

The Year Four student of Wailotua District School won with the fastest time of 7.74 seconds during the FMF Chow Games at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

“I was confident and I knew I was going to win eventhough some of the athletes were bigger than me.

“I don’t take starchy foods like cassava and dalo but rourou and biscuit,” she excitedly said.

Graciously running barefooted the gutsy Lakai defied competitors from bigger districts like Suva and Lautoka.

She stays with her grandmother Elesi Tinai in the village while her parents work in Lautoka.

“I want to thank my grandmother for her support towards my school work and athletics.

“I want to return next year and run again,” Lakai added.
