Tears flowed freely for Imtiaz Sahib after his eldest daughter on Friday was named dux of Tilak High School.

Suhana Sahib becomes the second dux awardee for the family after her younger sister, Shaleha was also named dux on Thursday for Lautoka Muslim Primary School.

Mr Sahib said the past few days had been a blessing.

“One in a million that parents can experience having both their daughters claiming the dux award,” he said.

“Seeing her receive the award was an emotional time for me. I was in tears. It is indeed a happy moment for me.

“When she was in Year Four, she saw the urge to do her best academically after seeing other students winning the dux awards.

“She came home and told her mum that she wanted to get that award one day. Her mum told her ‘why can’t you do that for yourself?’, and so from Year 11 she picked up on her academic goals.”

Suhana, who was also awarded the Nelson Mandela National Essay prize, paid tribute to her parents for their endless support.

“I am truly happy and really appreciative towards my parents for guiding me throughout my journey,” she said.
