PASSING OF DIRECTOR METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Ravind Kumar, Director of the Department of Fiji Meteorological Service, who passed away at his home in Waqadra, Nadi on Sunday 18th November,2018.
The Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, National Disaster Management and Meteorological Service family has expressed its deepest sympathies to Mr. Kumar’s family.
The late Mr Kumar was a committed civil servant and has brought his remarkable passion, experience and energy in the national weather service as well as in the region.
The late Director had a long and illustrious career of 31 years with the Fiji Meteorological Services. He began his career as a Technical assistant, commonly known as a weather observer and rose to the highest rank within the organisation.
Work History Timeline:
- Joined the Department on 19th September, 1987 as a Technical Assistant (weather observer)
- A year later he became a Senior Technical Assistant
- 1988, transferred to Udu Point meteorological office in Vanua Levu
- 1990, promoted to Technical officer class 2
- 1991, transferred to Nausori meteorological office
- 1995, sent to Bureau of Meteorology in Australia to be trained as a forecaster, returned after 10 months and worked as an assistant forecaster for three years
- 1998, he was appointed as a Scientific officer in the Department’s Climate Division
- 2005, he was promoted to Senior Scientific Officer
- 2014, promoted to Principal Scientific Officer, Climate Division
- 2015, appointed as the Director for Fiji Meteorological Service and served until his untimely passing on Sunday afternoon, 18th November,2018.
Mr. Kumar is survived by his wife and two children. He will be cremated at the Wailoaloa Cemetery in Nadi tomorrow (Wednesday 21st November, 2018).
