Ellen Mar, 83, could not contain her joy as granddaughter Johnelle Fonorito picked up the dux award during the prizegiving ceremony of Saint Agnes Primary School yesterday at Lambert Hall in Suva.

“I feel on top of the world, I am so proud of her,” said Ms Mar, who had made sure she was there to witness her granddaughter’s achievement.

Johnelle Fonorito also scooped subject awards in English, social and health science.

The 13-year-old from Wailoku, Suva, scored 458 out of 500 in the Fiji Year 8 Examinations and aspires to become a doctor.

“I want to save lives, make a difference in this world,” she said.

Johnelle dedicate her awards to parents John and Salote Fonorito, who have been a source of inspiration.

“They are very good parents. They are kind, hardworking and determined to help us in any way possible,” she said.

Her mother works as a technical officer for Telecom Fiji while her father stays at home.

“With four kids, financial difficulties tend to arise, but by God’s grace we always make it through” said Ms Salote.

“We have high hopes from Johnelle and I have complete faith that she will continue to do us proud in future.”
