Risha Singh credited her success to her parents and only brother, Pawan Singh, while receiving the Dux award at Labasa Sangam Primary School yesterday.

The only daughter of the family living at Delailabasa scored 483 out of 500 in her annual examination and broke the school’s two-year record.

She aspires to be a marine biologist and said her inspiration was her brother, who was also the Dux of Labasa College Year 11 this year.

“I would like to thank my parents, Prem Singh who is the assistant principal of Labasa Muslim College and Rohini Singh, the assistant principal of Waiqele College, for their support,” Risha said.

“After school whatever I didn’t understand during the class I would search on YouTube to have better knowledge.

“I was able to do this after my parents gifted me a desktop.

“I would like to thank my brother for encouraging me to work hard,” the 13-year-old lass said.

“I want to continue with the family tradition and that is my parents were ex-students of Labasa College and my brother is currently studying there.

“So, for Year Nine and onwards I will study at Labasa College and make my parents proud again.

“In my life the biggest lesson I have learnt is that if we the children be obedient to our parents, God is watching and in the due right time will bless us.”

She scored 100 in Mathematics, 93 in English, 94 in Social Science, 98 in Healthy Living, 91 in Basic Science and 98 in Hindi.
