Fiji Meteorological Services director Ravind Kumar has died after a short illness at Nadi Hospital.

Dubbed “the weatherman”, Mr Kumar is suspected to have suffered a heart attack.

His wife, Reena Kumar, confirmed that her husband died on Sunday at around 5.30pm.

“He had a heart attack. On Sunday he got all dressed up and was ready for work then I saw him shaking. I called him, but he was not responding so we took him to the hospital.”

Former Minister for Local Government, Housing & Environment, Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala said: “It was a privilege to work with him in the ministry and during my term as the minister. I found him to be reliable and honest and he carried out his work diligently.

“Definitely we have lost a hard worker, which is unfortunate. I convey my deepest condolences to the family during this time.”

Mr Kumar was born in Sigatoka and brought up in Nawaicoba, Nadi, where he attended SSKMC and worked in various organisations until he joined the Fiji Met office as an observer in 1987.

After 26 years of service at the Met Office, Mr Kumar took over the post of Director in 2015 until his death.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

Mr Kumar will be cremated at the Wailoaloa Cemetery in Nadi today.
