As Sapna Devi, of Bethel Primary School, went up to pick her dux award, a figure in the crowd wept with joy as she did so. Her parents both come from humble beginnings. Her father was unable to attend tertiary education because of financial constraints.

Sapna said her father, Sunil Prasad, a security officer of Professional Security Services, went through hard times.

“After completing Year 13 at Labasa Sangam College, my father couldn’t go to university because of the lack of financial support,” Sapna said.

“Whenever he talked about his unfortunate situation he cries and this motivated me to study hard and live his dream.

“My mother, Pritika Devi, 38, works as a saleswoman at RB Patel Supermarket,” the eldest of three siblings residing at Namara, Labasa said.

“Both my parents are working and sometimes it’s my responsibility to look after my sister and brother.

“Being responsible has led me to discipline myself and use time wisely for studies.

“This contributing factor enabled me to achieve higher.”

The 13-year-old aspires to become a doctor. She thanked her parents and teachers for their support.
