Zalika Nisha, daughter of a panelbeater and mechanic, made her father Riyaz Khan beam with pride by scooping the dux award at Valebasoga Secondary School in Labasa yesterday.

The 18-year-old of Valebasoga, Labasa, aspires to become the first dentist in her family, she said she was thankful to her father for granting permission to continue education.

“My elder sister got married and my younger brother is still studying and I asked my father if he could support my education to which he said yes,” Zalika said.

“My father who is 40 years old, operates his private business from home by the name Johnny Motor Repairs.

“Performing the role of a headgirl in school motivated me to study very hard.

“I would like to thank my parents, teachers and principal Ahmed Tauwab for their blessing and support,” the Year 13 student said.

“Being originally from Valebasoga and studying in the village community school is a proud feeling which will forever remain in my life.”
