Seremaia Tuwai stands a good chance of winning the World Rugby 7s player of the year award tomorrow.

But the former Fiji Airways Fijian 7s captain, who flew out with the team to Dubai yesterday for the first tournament of the World Sevens Series, will not attend the annual event at the Salle des Etioles, Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Coach Gareth Baber wants all his men to start with a bang in Dubai and Tuwai involved right from the start. This is the second year running Tuwai has been nominated for the award.

The 29-year-old led Fiji to five title wins in the 2018 series including four-in-a-row (Vancouver, Hong Kong, Singapore, London), scored 25 tries and was included in the HSBC Dream Team of the Series.

The other nominees this year are Perry Baker (USA), who won the award last year, and Ben O’Donnell (Australia). The only Fijian who has won the award was Samisoni Viriviri in 2014.
