Anisah Firdaws’ hard work from the very beginning has seen her walk away with the dux award during the Nadi Muslim College prizegiving on Wednesday.

The 18-year-old said to be rewarded as the school’s top academic student required full commitment from the start.

“You have to start from the beginning and not when the exams are just months away,” she said.

During the year she was challenged with the death of her paternal grandparents.

“Last year in August my grandfather passed away, eight months later my grandmother (Hamida Khan) passed away too. It was hard for me to cope with my studies since she was so close to me and she raised us,” Anisah said.

“It was her dream to see me with the Dux award. I remember her words not to give up hope. I worked hard. And our teacher really motivated us to achieve excellence in our work.”

Anisah plans to study commerce and education at the University of the South Pacific (USP).

She scored the highest in accounting (95), economics (96) and computer (97) in the school’s annual examination, scoring 375 out of 400.
