President to address Parliament tomorrow

The new Parliament convenes for the first time tomorrow after the 2018 General Election.
After the formalities in the morning, the President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote, will address Parliament in its ceremonial opening at 3pm. Parliament will then be adjourned to a later date.
The day begins with a proclamation, summoning Parliament.
Elected members will then take their oath.
This will be followed by the election of the Speaker. Nominations will be called. The FijiFirst Government will submit its nominees for Speaker and deputy Speaker.
Dr Jiko Luveni is tipped to be re-elected Speaker whether the Opposition put forward its nominees or not.
The Speaker will then call for nominations for Leader of the Opposition. If there is only one nominee, it is certain that it will be Sitiveni Rabuka, the new Opposition Leader designate.
Standing Orders will be adopted before Parliament is adjourned for the ceremonial opening.
