The Fiji Police Force is preparing to beef up operations during the school holiday and upcoming festive season.

More than 51,000 speeding infringement notices were issued January 1 – November 23, while more than 1000 drivers have been arrested for drunk driving.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said because the festive season led to a lot of merry making and social gatherings, the force anticipated an increase in movement and activities on our busy roads and, as seen in the past, safety was not always prioritised.

“We will continue to issue pleas for everyone to take road safety seriously,” she said.

“However, it is ultimately up to every individual whether they want to listen and comply and whether they value their lives and that of their loved ones and keep in mind that failure to take the advisories seriously could result in injury or the loss of lives.”

Earlier, the Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu reminded Police officers that they had a dedicated life of service and service came first before any other special events such as Christmas.

“Your uniform does not make you immune to the law, your job is important, sometimes tempers will flare. When you are caught up in such challenges, take a breather,” he said.
