Issues of Agriculture cannot be addressed in isolation but through collaboration between government and universities.

This was the statement made by the Minister of Agriculture Mahendra Reddy while officiating the statement of cooperation between the Fiji National University, College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (CAFF) yesterday.

Mr Reddy said they will work with FNU- CAFF to develop our agriculture sector through research and innovation, provide policy recommendations and strategic direction to better Fijian agriculture sector.

Mr Reddy added issues of Agriculture cannot be addressed in isolation and this collaboration will help further develop the agriculture sector in Fiji.

“This cooperation should carve the path to overcome the complex challenges that our agriculture sector faces and recommend transformative actions to overcome them,” Mr Reddy said.

“It is in our national interest that we utilize the wealth of collective wisdom and expertise in various facets of agriculture at our national University to invigorate our agriculture sector.

“We need further research and development and FNU is the best place institution to provide technical support and much-needed research to bolster our agriculture sector.”

FNU College of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Dean Professor Paul A. Iji believe that this is a far-cry from the potential contribution that the sector can make to the national economy.

Mr Iji added Fiji should be the net exporter, rather than an importer of food and agriculture goods.

“FNU possess expertise across this broad range of fields, and we have reached out to the ministries responsible for managing the agriculture industries,” Mr Iji said.

“We welcome the spirit of cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and are open to similar engagement with stakeholders that are responsible for agriculture development in Fiji.”
