In an effort to minimise accidents at sea, 64 youths of Cakaudrove are currently attending boat master and restricted class six master/engineer training on Kioa Island in the Northern Division.

The three weeks training organised by Ministry of Youth and Sports and facilitated by Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) ends this Friday with presentation of certificates to participants.

MSAF acting chief executive officer Captain Philip Hill said the purpose of the training was to enhance safety and ensure that boat captains were aware of risks connected.

“We have been conducting training for boat captains since 2011 and the demand from youths has been very high,” Captain Hill said.

“After training participants are encouraged to get their licence and registration done so that they comply with the enforcement we have put in place for safety reasons.

“Through this where we can get record on the number of licensed boat captains in Fiji.

“The Boat captains need to be 18 years and above.”

“Meanwhile, I would like to advise boat captains as we grace into the festive season to take necessary precautions,

“Be mindful of overloading and weather at all times.”

Ministry of Youth and Sports Northern Divisional manager Walter Matalau said through such training, participants could have a career and employment opportunity since they will receive a certificate.

“They are empowered both with knowledge and skills on first hand,” Mr Matalau said.

The youths are from Kioa Island, peninsula of Natewa Bay, Yanuca Island and Taveuni Island.
