The sedition case against Opposition Member of Parliament Mosese Bulitavu and businessman Jagath Karunaratne has been adjourned to February 26, 2019.

The pair appeared before Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili yesterday as their case continued for a re- trial at the Suva Magistrates Court.

They are charged with one count of sedition.

State prosecutor Yogesh Prasad asked for a longer adjournment date as they needed more time to prepare for the case.

Defence lawyers, Barbara Malimali and Filimoni Vosarogo did not object to this application by the prosecution.

Bail for both men were extended.

Bulitavu was represented by Ms Malimali while Karunaratne was represented by Mr Vosarogo.

They asked the court if the two accused could report at the nominated Police station once a week.

They currently report three times a week.

Chief Magistrate Usaia Ratuvili granted this and ordered that the pair report every last Friday of the month, starting today.

The case

It is alleged that between August 1, 2011, and August 27, 2011, the pair spray painted words in different places between Nausori and Suva with the seditious intention of bringing into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection against the Government.

After the initial trial, the trial Magistrate found them guilty and both were convicted on March 26, 2018.

They were each sentenced to two years and six months imprisonment on April 30, 2018.

They appealed their sentence and conviction to the High Court and the conviction and sentence were overturned on August 24, 2018.
