The tournament, which involves 48 men and 16 women teams, kicks off at the ANZ Stadium, Suva at 9am today.

The 2018 Raka 7s rugby tournament theme is ‘Violence against women not in our game plan.’

The tournament, which consists of 48 men and 16 women teams, kicks-off at 9am today at the ANZ Stadium, Suva.

Up for grabs will be the Kinton Cup for men and the Fiji Women Crisis Centre (FWCC) Cup for women.

The winner in the men’s competition will receive $20,000, while the victorious women’s side will take home $10,000.

FWCC coordinator Shamima Ali was delighted to be part of the tournament as sponsors in advocating the theme.

“We are delighted to partner with the Raka 7s for the first time this year,”Ali said.

“We are grateful to be given this opportunity to raise the issue once again in the next two days on the field.

“We are also having a 16 days of activism on violence against women so it’s a very opportune time for us to raise the issue through this partnership.”

Meanwhile, tournament director Ropate Kauvesi said preparations are on track.

“We have teams coming from as far as Taveuni,” Kauvesi said.

“It will be a non violence tournament and that goes for both physical and verbal.

“We have both notified our referees and team managers and we will be reiterating that again to everyone involved.

“For us as an organising committee we do value the programme that we are going into and it’s a huge thing for us as well.

“And after being part of the workshop with FWCC we understand the role that we play and we do value women’s contribution in our lives.”
