Fiji have a real chance of beating New Zealand in today’s OFC Women’s Nations Cup final, says USA-based Vodafone Fijian women’s football team striker Trina Davis.

The two teams meet at 7pm (Fiji time) at the Stade Numa Daly in Noumea, New Caledonia, in what is Fiji’s first ever competition final.

The winner qualifies for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, and also for the 2020 Olympic Games.

Davis, 17, a recent acquisition for Fiji, has quickly become an important player for head coach Marika Rodu.

She believes it is realistic for fans to expect a good result – or even a win – despite New Zealand being the superior team in the contest.

“The team is super excited and we know we want to win this (final) and qualify for the World Cup but we thank God for everything,” Davis told SUNsports while speaking from the team’s camp in Noumea.

“The coaches have pushed us to be the best we can and have given us everything we need to play against New Zealand and to keep us healthy and fit.”

Fiji’s only loss in the tournament came at the hands of the Kiwis during pool play.

Rodu, having already qualified for the semi-final, rested 10 of his starters in the 10-0 defeat.

Davis has been the one of the stars of the tournament, enjoying a personal tally of five goals in four matches.

She was also Fiji’s top scorer in the qualifying rounds of the tournament, leading the line with four goals in three games.

“My personal aim for this final is to win,” she said.

“It has always been a dream of mine to go the World Cup and I didn’t think I would get the chance this soon, but it’s now come down to one game and I know we can win this.”

“I just want to thank everyone for supporting us; to the coaches: I thank them for everything they have done for the team to push us and bring out the best from all the players.”
