Police Officer Gets Two Years Imprisonment

 

A Police officer was sentenced to two-years imprisonment by Labasa Magistrates Court yesterday.

Rohit Prasad, charged with one count dangerous driving occasioning death, appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi.

The 40-year-old first time offender was represented by private lawyer Ami Kohli.

The brief facts of the case are that on January 26, 2012, along the Labasa Wainikoro Road at Vulovi, he was driving a motor vehicle registration number GN864 in a manner dangerous to another person occasioning the death of Isireli Moce.

Magistrate Tuberi said he could not consider suspended sentencing in this case and considered the principle of rehabilitation and deterrent.

He added the sentence would be based on principle of deterrence both specific and general to denounce such conduct.

Hence, he was sentenced to two-years imprisonment with a non-parole of 18 months. Edited by Jonathan Bryce
