Ba gained the advantage in the two- match series with an aggregate goal in their 1-0 win over Pacific Cup champions Lautoka in their Pillay Garment’s Champion Versus Champion at Churchill Park on Friday night.

The win puts defending champions Lautoka in a precarious situation as they go into today’s second leg down by an away goal.

The match was a home game for Lautoka and they may have some hope of turning the tables because the return match today is Ba’s home match but played at the same venue. This is the Blues home ground.

The first spell was dominated by Lautoka with some fast attacking soccer but getting ball past Ba goalkeeper Atunaisa Naucukidi got more difficult as the match wore on.

Perhaps Lautoka were trying to display why they were the Pacific Cup champions but forgot to net the goals that mattered.

While the home side were fast in their attack, Ba opted to sit back and weathered the storm, a tactic that had been used over the years from the times of the late Waisea Naicovu, Jone Nakosia, Semi Tabaiwalu and Josaia Tubuna.

This was the Ba of old and one could sense that Lautoka would be in for surprise when they marched off after a scoreless first half.

The second spell was even but Ba stepped up their attacks and eventually their patience paid off.

Darold Kalasi headed in a low cross by Sanaila Waqanicakau from the right in the 72nd minute that gave Ba the winner.

Lautoka were much better in their control of the football but over-eagerness was their downfall.

Today’s return match kicks off at 3pm.
