Remand inmate Niko Talemaitoga surrendered himself to the Southern Division Taskforce yesterday morning after five days on the run.

Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho acknowledged the support shown to the Police force to enable officers to recapture all five escapees.

Talemaitoga, Suliano Rokosuka, Emosi Baledrokadroka, Maika Tovagone and Jonacani Qalova escaped from the cell block at the Suva Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon.

“Information given by members of the public aided the work of the taskforce and is a great show of support towards fighting crime,” Brigadier-General Qiliho said.

The media’s role in disseminating the timely information has been acknowledged by the head of the Fiji Police Force.

The first escapee to be caught, Rokosuka, was arrested on Wednesday night at Wailea Settlement.

On Friday, Baledrokadroka was recaptured at Nakasi, Nasinu, while Tovagone and Qalova were arrested at Vugalei, Lami.

In a special court sitting on Saturday, the three escapees were charged with aggravated robbery and escape from lawful custody.

They were further remanded in custody. They will appear for mention on December 13.

Ledua Tikotani was also charged with harbouring an escapee.

His case will be called for mention on December 14.
