Police: Autopsy Reveals Possible Murder

The Fiji Police Force has now classified as murder a case involving a Fijian man who died at the Valelevu Health Centre on Saturday after his citizen’s arrest.

It is alleged that the late Bhawan Singh, 32, was arrested by a citizen on the said day for allegedly damaging a property and was taken to the Nasinu Police Station.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed they now had a suspect in relation to the alleged murder of Mr Singh.

She said they would work on the information gathered through the investigation process to pursue the case further.

The cause of death, according to the post mortem examination result, was asphyxia (a condition arising when the body is deprived of oxygen, causing unconsciousness or death; suffocation). It also stated airway obstruction, severe neck trauma and blunt force trauma.

Mr Singh was arrested by a citizen for allegedly damaging his vehicle, which was parked along Narere Stage 1 last Saturday afternoon. It was alleged that Mr Singh was heavily intoxicated at the time of the citizen arrest and when he was taken to the Nasinu Police Station.

At the station, Mr Singh then complained of being ill. He was then rushed to the Makoi Health Centre for treatment and later transferred to the Valelevu Hospital where Mr Singh later died.
