Sadie Tunaulu joined Fijian Elections Office (FEO) in 2014 because she wanted to try something new.

The mother of five hails from Namukailau in Macuata and has maternal links in Dravuwalu Village in Totoya, Lau.

Ms Tunaulu was one of those recognised during the Fijian Elections Office awards at the Tanoa Plaza in Suva on Wednesday night.

Ms Tunaulu said: “I joined FEO IN 2014 and before I joined FEO, I was the analysis programmer at the Software Factory Limited based in Suva.

“I joined FEO because it was a new challenge for me and also I wanted to do something different than what I have been doing before. I wanted to do more and also for the nation as well.

“One thing I have learned when I joined FEO was that we as locals can do it. There is no need for us to be going overseas to understand technologies because the capabilities we have locally is immense.

“I think FEO has shown that we can do it locally and that we have capabilities within us.”

Ms Tunaulu said she wanted to see more women in the IT field.

“In 2014, I came in as the Manager IT and that time we were just concentrating on IT works. The challenge was that there was nothing there,” she said.

“We had to come in and set up everything. We had a lot of things that we had to redesign or implement in 2014. So there was a lot of ground works.

“In 2018, the new thing we were able to do was implement the changes that we wanted compared to 2014.

“We were able to get a new department which was the Elections Management information system department where we were able to implement a new technology and innovation for the 2018 General Election.”
