Fiji Rugby Union will introduce the Under 19 grade in the provincial competition which will replace the U20 grade next year.

This was confirmed during the special general meeting which was held at Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi yesterday.

Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor confirmed the changes with SUNsports.

“FRU has identified a major problem with talented secondary rugby school rugby players going missing after finishing school in the U18 grade.

“There is no national competition in place for them to continue playing in.

“What we’ve noted in the past is that when players leave U18, there is no pathway for them so we have reduced the age so each provincial team will have U19 team instead of U20,” O’Connor said.

Having the U19 grade will also assist the U20 coaches to identify players to participate in the U20 World Championship.

“Our U20 has been promoted to the Under20 World Championship and we believe that having an U19 competition will allow coaches to select the team and have the team for two years which makes them more competitive to compete in the World Under20 Championship.

“It gives them more time to prepare the team,” he said.

Women

The women’s 10s competition will be introduced in the Vodafone Vanua Championship while 15s game will be played in the Skipper Cup Premiership.
