SODELPA, NFP Files Election Petition

An election petition was filed today by Mamlakah Lawyers by Sitiveni Rabuka and Biman Prasad, as leaders of SODELPA and NFP on issues arising out of the conduct, count and tallying of results in the 2018 General Election.

The matters raised in the petition include claims of unlawful conduct by election candidates under the Electoral Act and breaches by the Supervisor of Elections of his duties under the Electoral Act.

The petition must, under the Constitution, be determined by the Court of Disputed Returns within 21 days, that is, by 31 December 2018.

Directions will shortly be sought from the Court on the filing of evidence, legal submissions and the relevant court hearing, in order to efficiently achieve this.

Pending direction from the Court, the petitioners are not releasing the petition to the media. At this stage they request that the media and other interested parties should approach the Court of Disputed Returns for copies.
