The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team bounced back winning the Cape Town Sevens after 13 years in dominating style yesterday.

After a fifth-place finish in Dubai in the first leg, the Gareth Baber–coached side hammered USA 29-15 in one–sided final as the Fijians raced into a 22-0 lead and kept their noses in front as they showed their class throughout the weekend.

Springboks’ legend/rugby commentator Joel Stransky rated the Fijians as the team to beat after day one.

“The Fijians are deserved winners as they are 20 per cent better than all the teams playing at the Cape Town Sevens,” said Stransky, who scored all the points for South Africa in the15-12 win over the All Blacks in the 1995 Rugby World Cup final.

The win will hold special significance for some for a few reasons.

  • Kalione Nasoko first tournament win as captain;
  • Coach Baber winning his first title win in South Africa;
  • Seremaia Tuwai scoring his 100th try; and
  • Rookie Vilimoni Botitu named man of the final in his second tournament.

In the Cup quarterfinals Fiji beat Spain 46-7 and South Africa 17-12 in the semifinal.

The World Sevens Series resumes on January 26 and 27 next year in the third leg in Hamilton before heading to Sydney on February 2 and 3.
