The Public Diplomacy Section of the United States (US) Embassy Suva and US Coast Guard Cutter Munro (WMSL 755) crew took part in two community service events while docked in Suva on December 7 and 8, 2018.

Their first activity last Friday 2018 took place at St. Christopher’s Home in Nakasi, an orphanage on the outskirts of Suva. Twenty crew spent their time cleaning the compound, clearing overgrowth and a fallen tree, even fixing a broken fence.

“When we first got there they had a presentation where they sat us down and sang Silent Night for us” said Seaman Caitlin Pascoe, a deckhand on the Munro.

“I loved it. I used to do missionary work in high school, and it made me miss outreach and being with people in the community.”

The second activity, on Saturday Dec. 8, 2018 was a beach clean-up outside Suva in Lami along the foreshore beside Tikaram Park, popular with families and children.

Two crew from the vessel worked alongside Lami Town Council staff, including the chief executive officer, and the media.

“It was awesome getting to talk to the people,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Carli Carnes, an electrician’s mate on the Munro.

“I love interacting with the community here. It was a blast,” Petty Officer 3rd Class Carnes said.

“When berthed in Suva, our US crew pride themselves on giving back to communities in whichever way they can and are grateful for the experience in Fiji,” he said.

With everyone’s collaboration, around 500kg of rubbish was collected in the space of just a few hours. The impact on the foreshore was most noticeable.

Lami Town Council were the heroes of the day as they not only provided the equipment needed but their willingness to be part of the clean-up demonstrated a great partnership.

USCGC Douglas Munro (WHEC-724) is a High Endurance Cutter of the United States Coast Guard, named for Signalman First Class Douglas A. Munro, the only Coast Guardsman to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
