Court Remands Man In Rape Case

A 20-year-old man has been remanded by the High Court in Suva for allegedly raping his cousin.

The accused appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar. He is charged with one count each of rape and theft.

It is alleged that on May 25, 2018, in Suva, the accused had carnal knowledge with the complainant without her consent.

It is also alleged that on the same day, the accused dishonestly appropriated the complainant’s Samsung brand mobile phone. The accused pleaded not guilty to one count of rape. However, he pleaded guilty to one count of theft.

The complainant in the matter is a 16-year-old.

The state lawyer Unaisi Tamanikaroi told the court that there were no admissions in the caution interview.

She said the accused in his caution interview stated the act was consensual and sought time to file proposed agreed facts.

The matter has been transferred to Justice Salesi Temo and will be called for mention on January 28.
