Man In Domestic Violence Case Bailed

A welder of Naitasiri, charged with one count of domestic violence, was granted bail by the High Court in Suva yesterday.

The man appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar. It is alleged that on November 7, 2018, the accused assaulted his de facto partner.

The accused had informed the court that he had reconciled with the complainant and sought bail.

State lawyer informed the court that the medical report of the complainant stated bruises on the neck, swelling on her ear and abrasions on her right knee.

He informed the court that the accused had allegedly hit the complainant with a spade.

The complainant, who was present in court, had said that the accused was short tempered.

She told the court that she had provoked him to act in such a manner.

Justice Goundar said every woman that comes to the court in domestic violence case says that she is the one to be blamed for the use of violence.

He said whatever the reason may be, it did not justify the use of violence in a relationship.

“The accused was raised by a woman all by herself and hence he should respect and understand women more,” Justice Goundar said.

The accused was granted bail on the sum of $200 and assurance of one surety.

He was ordered to comply with the strict bail conditions and a travel ban as also imposed on the accused.

He was also ordered to report to the Nausori Police Station every Saturday between 6am and 6pm.

The matter was adjourned to March 1, 2019, for plea.
