Tomu Naqarasiga, 19, did not expect to win an award during his graduation from the Centre for Appropriate Technology and Development (CATD) in Nadave, Nausori, yesterday.

He was overjoyed when he was called up to the podium to receive the Director Award and Best Trainee Award in Mechanical Engineering during the graduation ceremony before family and friends.

The 19-year-old hails from Levukana Village in Lomaloma, Lau, and has maternal links to Nacamaki Village in Koro, Lomaiviti.

He had left his village to stay at an uncle’s home so that he could continue his education.

“My parents live in the village and I wanted to make them proud. Leaving home is never easy, but I am glad that my aunt and uncle never made me feel home sick,” Mr Naqarasiga said.

“I am happy to be receiving this award. Hard work has really paid off. I know my family has high expectations of me and I believe I have made them proud,” the teenager said.

An emotional Vasemaca Naqarasiga who witnessed her son’s graduation described him as an average student.

“My son has really made us proud today. I came all the way from Vanuabalavu to see my son graduate and was shocked when he was awarded two prestigious awards.

The proud mother added that a disciplined upbringing contributed to his success.
