Fiji Airways Fijian 7s star Filimoni Botitu is focusing on scoring more tries in the 2018/2019 World Sevens Series.

That was the exact story line when the 20 -year -old ran onto Cape Town Stadium in South Africa on Monday.

He scored two tries one from his solo effort with an intercept to help his team with a 29-15 win over USA in the cup final.

‘Bebe flyer’

The Korobebe, Nadi, native is dubbed as the ‘Bebe flyer’ for his beautiful sheer agility and flamboyant performance which earned him the player of the final award.

“When I got the ball in my hands I only thought of the try line as I saw the two American players were on fire.

“I love to put me in those challenging situation and taking up opportunities. The second try was also important to set our sights to be in front of the USA. It is all of good memories.

“It does not stop there really there is more to come and I will try to improve my game in. Hamilton next month. From Dubai we learnt a lot at the expense of losing and we took it to Cape Town. We had fixed our defence which enabled us to win.”

Player of the final

He was named the best player of the final.

“I did not expect to win the award in the final but all praises to God. My long term aim is to win a rugby contract overseas.”

The former Natabua High School student has been a star in the making after he returned with the Koli Sewabu-coached Vodafone Fijian Under-20 side, winning the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Bucharest, Romania on September 10.

He admitted that he has been inspired by his cousin and former Fiji 7s rep Filimoni Botitu.

Mother

His mother Merewai Ritanai was proud of her son’s achievement.

“It’s not only me who has seen what he is capable of doing on the field. The whole world witnessed it. It is a humble and proud moment for me as a mother see the child I raised is a man doing wonders now,” she said.
