Since 2008, the Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has been organising a Christmas family lunch for inmates and their families.

Yesterday, the event was held at Suva Corrections Centre.

The Assistant Commissioner for Operations Senior Superintendent Sakiusa Veiwili said they had been hosting lunch for the prisoners’ families since last week around the country.

“This is one of our co-role through care. It means we want to provide successful integration of those under the care of FCS and it requires full acceptance from the community.

“Close family and relatives play an important role in this.

“The inmates have to understand that they are members of the family and they need to re-integrate with their family upon their discharge.

“These offenders continued to commit prison offences,” he said.

In addition, this Christmas lunch was to encourage the offenders to learn from their mistakes.

“We want to thank the family members who visited them. They have come from far away location such as Labasa, Naitasiri and Tailevu and we want to applaud them for giving their time to their family members who are in prison. This shows that they accept them.”

However, those who continued to conceal contrabands were not allowed to visit their families.
