A man who was labelled a serial rapist for children and a pedophile by the Assistance Director of Public Prosecutions Dato’ Shyamala Alagendra has been sentenced to 11 years behind bars.

The man was convicted of three counts of rape, four counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted rape.

He was sentenced to 11 years, nine months and 15 days imprisonment with a non-parole period of seven years, nine months and 15 days.

He raped and sexually assaulted a boy and two girls between January 2014 and December 2015.

The victims were 11, 15 and 13 years old at the time of the incidents.

The man was the uncle of the 11-year-old boy and was the neighbour of the 15-year-old and 13-year-old girls.

In the eight separate counts, the man raped the victims, showed them his private parts, forced them to touch his private parts and did sexual acts in front of them.

While sentencing the man, Suva High Court Judge Justice Chamath Morais said the man had breached the trust of the victims who were under the age of 13 years.

“This event also had a long lasting psychological and emotional impact on all three victims.

“Children are out future. Society cannot condone any such offences against the children.

“The courts must protect women and children from such offences and trauma.”

The man was given 30 days to appeal to the Fiji Court of Appeal.
