The Suva football team is searching for a coach that can help the team qualify for the 2020 OFC Champions League, following the departure of Gurjit Singh.

Singh was brought in for October’s Courts Inter-District Championship but failed to secure a win as Suva lost to Lautoka in the final. He returned to the United States after the tournament.

Critics said the team management were making short-term decisions with low chances of a positive result.

Suva Football president Ritesh Pratap says they want a coach that will be with the team long-term.

The team advertised the role on its official Facebook page, and Pratap says five have already applied.

“Coaches that come in only for two to three months really disrupt the team so we want to move away from that,” he said.

“We will give the coach time to settle, with the main priority being the Vodafone Premir League and O-league qualification. Any tournament win will be a bonus.”

Pratap is confident the team can come good next year after poor results last season despite spending big on new players, Antonio Tuivuna, Meli Codro and Laisenia Raura.

Suva played in the IDC and Battle of the Giants finals last season and was fourth in the Vodafone Premier League, 12 points behind winner Lautoka.
