Zoyah Shaina Riaz’s love of playing doctor is now a reality after she graduated with a Bachelor in Medicine and Bachelor in Surgery last Friday.

Zoya, 24, had always loved to play doctor with her set toys. When her mother Sharina identified her potential, she began directing Shaina to become what she is today.

The Kulukulu head teacher said: “It was always my dream to see my daughter become a doctor. When she was a toddler she loved to play with doctor toy sets and from there I knew the right path to guide her. I always supported her to become what she is today.”

Her father, Riaz Ullah, a head teacher of Rahmatullah Khan Memorial School in Sigatoka, then urged Shaina to become a doctor and help combat the medical problems that the Nadroga society faced.

Zoya’s parents have also acknowledged the Government’s Toppers and TELS programme for its financial help.

Zoya said: “It was my mum’s dream to see me become a doctor and the Government took care of my fees, accommodation and meals for six years and I thank them for this.

“I am happy to fulfill my parent’s dreams and now I am looking forward to serve the society and the Nadroga community in terms of healthy living.”

Zoya is the eldest of two siblings. Her younger brother Zuheyr Zirus Riaz is a trainee pilot.

Zoya will start work as an intern on January 2, 2019 at the Lautoka Hospital.
