Fijian designer and lawyer, Sabrina Iqbal Khan, organised a fashion show at the Seabreeze Hotel in Lautoka on December 15, in aid of the Almanah Widow’s Home in Teidamu, Lautoka.

The unique fashion show, which showcased the Proverbs Women Collection clothing line by Ms Khan, was based around the Proverbs 31 concept of the Bible, which tells a story on women empowerment, a first fashion show in Fiji which was plainly focused on a concept from the Bible.

Ms Khan said it was also the launch for her clothing line in Fiji.

“We are trying to build a widow’s home in Teidamu, Lautoka and that women’s home is dedicated to empowering women, training women and basically letting the widows know that even though your husband’s have passed away, this is not the end of the line here,” Ms Khan said.

“The clothing is for all size for women. I want every woman to feel beautiful regardless of her size because she’s a daughter of God she’s going to be beautiful.”

Ms Khan said when the women would be putting on the clothing, it would always be at the back of their minds that the funds and hard work used to buy and make the attire, was going towards women empowerment in the country.

“When I launched this line I wanted to have more so Godly pieces that were not only modest but had women feel beautiful about themselves and when are you are going to be putting clothing on your backs, you are going to know that this has gone towards empowering women in Fiji, it’s made locally, it’s designed locally and its supporting women entrepreneurs,” she said.

“On the tag it reads, ‘Proverbs Women Collection Fiji, Designed and made in Fiji supporting local Women Empowerment. Each item has been made with love, care and according to the skill of the individual person. Your item will not be perfect, yet we will support the growth of women and empowerment all the same. Please pray for the hands that has made the item. Keep Shinning Beautiful Woman Love, Proverbs Women Collection’.”

She added when a fashion show was spirit-led under the banner of God, the end of the show would turn out to be amazing.

Ms Khan is now planning her next big show in February 2019.

“Grace that surrounds women, but more than anything the fact that women uplift one another, we take care of the community, we take care of our relationships, we take care of our families and we take care of ourselves and being daughters of God we can best do that under the banner of God,” she said.

“I think women empowerment is lacking when it comes to the fashion industry in Fiji, our designers do beautiful work but we don’t have a Christian theme to fashion show at any point and when you do have one that’s spirit-led and under the banner of God it’s going to be amazing as tonight’s success was.

“I designed all of them and I choose an aray of women who are either struggling in their lives or come from disadvantaged backgrounds, who could do with support and I give them the job. I had 25 pieces and three quarters have sold out. I have got Indian in me so you can see some of the Indian feel to some of them, I love my culture.”

Her next big show will be sometimes in February.

“We had 23 models, all volunteers,” she said.

And proverbs 31 really sets the scene for a woman and how she should carry herself and being a daughter of God you can achieve anything and because of Him who lives in me.”
