Street Party Returns To Labasa

The New Year street party will return to Labasa this year, party chairman Deepesh Goundar has confirmed.

“We have been on hold for the past three years due to various challenges, however, we are coming back in a bigger way this year,” Mr Goundar said.

“The Slayerz Charity Club had come forward to assist us in the organising the event.

“We are thankful to their support as it will help us maintain transparency and accountability.”

The programme starts at 7pm on New Year’s Eve in front of R.B Patel Supermarket and will close at 1am on New Year’s Day.

Mr Goundar said since the inception of the street party by their committee back in 2013, they only had three days to prepare.

“But this time, we have been given two weeks to plan this event in a big way,” he said.

“This is not just about the youths; children and the elderly in our communities can also join and enjoy themselves on New Year’s eve.

“The public can come and enjoy a wide range of music and entertainment; some prominent entertainers from the North will also be performing.

“The event will be alcohol free because public safety is paramount.

“A number of competitions and giveaways will also be held to keep everyone entertained.”

He said some people from the North travelled to Suva just to attend the street party.

“People are excited about it and I’m glad we have successfully organised one for the North this year,” he said.

A fireworks display is also planned to welcome the New Year.
