Residents of Jittu Estate Settlement in Raiwaqa and adjacent communities now have increased policing awareness with the recent launch of two neighbourhood watch billboards.

The launch by Fulton Hogan Hiways general manager Patrick Keenan was initiated by the Southern Division Crime Prevention Committee.

This was during its community policing outreach programme and family fun day.

“This neighbourhood watch programme encourages working together as a group to improve community relations and enhance the safety of families residing within the settlement and of those individuals who visit to do business in and around the neighbourhood,” Mr Keenan said.

“It also encourages interaction and a shared sense of responsibility between individuals, neighbours and communities to prevent and reduce delinquent behaviour,” he added.

The community policing programme is intended to strengthen the relationship between the residents of Jittu Estate Settlement and the Southern Division Community Policing Office.

It will also support and empower members of the community through health, education and recreational activities and engage the youth through activities of common interest such as sports and entrepreneurial project that build trust and self confidence.

Mr Keenan commended the 566 residents of Jittu Estate Settlement for taking the initiative to establish a crime prevention committee to foster changes in people’s mindset towards the role of law enforcers in relation to community policing.

The billboards will be set up on Grantham Road opposite the Rups Big Bear complex and the other opposite the Lagilagi Housing project on Gaji Road.

The FHH also contributed financially to the hosting of the event.
