University of the South Pacific student Neha Kumar used to worry about completing her assignments

The Koroipita Settlement resident of Lautoka, used to stay back at campus late  because of the lack of electricity at home.

Studying under battery-powered lights can be difficult at times. It was a despairing situation when the batteries went flat.

All that ended last night when the Minister for Economy and Attorney-General Aiyaz-Sayed-Khaiyum switched on electricity in the settlement.

Ms Kumar, 21,  grew up in Koroipita and knows well the challenges they faced without electricity. Her worries are now over. Today is the dawn of a new era for them.

The Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS) student said electricity in the comfort of her home was the best Christmas present.

“This is the greatest gift ever for Christmas,” she said. She was echoeing the sentiments of the residents.

She said: “This electricity will help me a lot with my studies.”
